A goalkeeper expected to play for Germany at the World Cup died after being hit by a train. He was 32.The footballer, who was also the goalkeeper for team Hannover 96, is thought to have committed suicide.Team president Martin Kind confirmed his death, and police later released a statement saying a man had been fatally struck by a train Tuesday night.
A statement released following the incident yesterday evening read: 'The victim is apparently national team goalkeeper Robert Enke from Hannover 96. The first police indications are that it was a suicide.'
Police spokesperson Stefan Wittke added: 'At 6.25pm (5.25pm GMT) he was run over by a regional express train running between Hamburg and Bremen. The train was travelling at the speed of 160kph (100mph).'
Enke was reportedly 'unstable' prior to his death, according to Hanover president Martin Kind, and had found it difficult to cope following the death of his two-year-old daughter Lara of a heart ailment in 2006.
He had not been selected for Germany's exhibition games against Chile on Saturday and Ivory Coast on Wednesday. But coach Joachim Loew had said Enke remained the leading candidate to be Germany's goalie at next year's World Cup in South Africa.
